SPEECH
Speech refers to the process of making sounds to form words, phrases, and sentences. A speech sound delay or disorder will impact the intelligibility of the speaker (how easily he/she is understood by others). Speech delays or disorders can be a result of injury to the muscles, nerves, or the brain areas that produce speech or developmental concerns with the speech mechanisms themselves (tongue, teeth, jaw, etc...). It may also be linked to difficulties with perception (hearing) of sounds. Empower Communication Services can provide speech assessment and speech therapy targeting articulation of speech sounds, motor-speech disorders and or phonological processes.

LANGUAGE
Expressive language is the ability to communicate with others using language. It includes the ability to use gestures and facial expressions to communicate as well as using words and combining them into phrases and sentences.
Receptive language is the ability to listen and understand language. It includes understanding both words and gestures, understanding questions and concepts.
One or both areas may be impacted at the same time as the result of developmental delays or acquired brain injury. A number of speech and language therapy techniques targeting language are available and are based on individual assessment results.

LITERACY

Literacy is the ability to read and write. Reading and writing development involves a range of complex language components including awareness of speech sounds (phonology), spelling patterns (orthography), word meaning (semantics), grammar (syntax) and patterns of word formation (morphology), all of which provide a necessary platform for reading fluency and comprehension and written language development. Empower Communication Services provides a compressive evidence-based literacy assessment and program to target a child's goals in reading and writing.
